The TBS Literary Society’s next book club meeting is The Last Kings of Shanghai, by Jonathan Kaufman, to be held at the Brigantine Community Center (in the Bingo Room) on Monday, April 4th p.m.  (The discussion will be available to out-of-town readers on Zoom.)

This well-written history by the Pulitzer Prize winning journalist stretching from Baghdad to Hong Kong to Shanghai to London, is about the Sassoons and the Kadoories–two Jewish families and their amazing effect on China’s business, politics, and society.   The story details the two families’ early business intrigues, opium smuggling, rescuing 18,000 Jews from Hitler’s Europe, the tsunami that was communism, and how their legacy remains today. It lends itself to a thought-provoking discussion!

If you have not attended in a while, the TBS Literary Society hopes the in-person format will entice to return to us. Your inclusion in our discussion has been missed.  If you have never attended a meeting, now might be the best time to do so.

Light snacks will be provided.  Please rsvp to adulted@seashul.org  (either for your in-person or Zoom participation.)
